AI Ark vs Clay (2026): Validation & True Cost

Pick AI Ark if you want a verified, export-ready list of people and companies at a predictable cost per contact. Pick Clay if you want a workbench for building multi-step enrichment and outreach workflows. Teams weighing a Clay alternative for list building often end up running both, with AI Ark as a source inside Clay.

Key takeaways

  • Database vs workbench. AI Ark is a database of 400M+ people and 70M+ companies that exports verified contacts straight from a search. Clay is a workflow platform where you build tables that buy data from third-party providers.

  • Validation built in. AI Ark verifies every email with BounceBan at export and only delivers addresses that pass. In Clay, validation is an optional step you configure yourself, including how catch-alls are treated.

  • Different scope. AI Ark delivers a verified file, an API and an MCP server and leaves sending to the tools you already run. Clay bundles signals, CRM auto-sync, a sequencer and an AI research agent inside its own workbench.

  • Cost per valid contact. At 10,000 contacts a month on annual billing, AI Ark works out to $9.02 per 1,000 verified emails and Clay's Launch plan to $44.00, using the same method on both sides.

  • One meter, not two. AI Ark charges one credit balance that rolls over up to 2x the monthly plan. Clay bills Actions and Data Credits separately, and unused Actions expire every billing cycle.

  • They work together. AI Ark's Clay templates let a Clay table call AI Ark row by row for a verified email.

What is AI Ark?

AI Ark is a B2B prospect and company discovery database for outbound teams, agencies and recruiters who need accurate lists at volume. It covers 400M+ people and 70M+ companies, with verified mobiles for 100M+ profiles, and the whole database is refreshed every 30 days.

The working assumption is that you already own your outreach stack: Smartlead, Instantly, a CRM, maybe Clay. AI Ark's job is to hand you a verified file you can load straight into it, with no cleaning step between search and send. The same data is available through the API at 300 requests per minute and an MCP server that works in Claude, Cursor and Windsurf.

Company Lookalike takes up to five seed company URLs and finds businesses that do the same thing. Net New vs Saved Records hides everyone you have already exported, and you are never charged twice for them on the web app. Filters cover headcount growth, employees by department, time in role separately from time at company, and company HQ separately from where the person sits.

What is Clay?

Clay is go-to-market infrastructure for teams that build their own data and outreach workflows. You work in tables or in Audiences, its data layer for larger lists, where columns run enrichments, AI research and sends. Clay sells access to 200+ data providers through one contract and chains them into "waterfalls" that move down a list of providers until one finds a valid match. Plans add job-change and web intent signals, CRM and warehouse sync, a sequencer, unlimited seats, and Claygent, an AI research agent. Clay says it fits teams building their own GTM systems and takes more thought to set up than simpler tools.

Clay's people and company search runs on stored snapshot data, with a live-scraping fallback when you enrich a person, and its guide says coverage is 15 to 25% lower in EMEA and APAC than in the US. Contact data comes from whichever providers you enable, and validation is a separate step using a provider you choose.

Clay publishes plan prices and documents how Actions and Data Credits are spent. Enterprise contracts are custom: Vendr data reported by Valley puts the median Clay contract at $59,996 a year across 96 purchases. It suits operations-minded teams willing to invest time in building workflows.

Data quality: where validation happens

How AI Ark does it

Validation is part of the export, not a step you add. AI Ark finds each email and checks it with BounceBan in real time. Only addresses that pass are written to the file; invalid, unknown and risky ones are dropped, not flagged.

A catch-all domain accepts every address, so a standard SMTP check can't tell a real mailbox from a guess. AI Ark validates each one individually and delivers it only when confirmed, labeled Catch-All Valid. The expected bounce rate is under 1.5%.

On average AI Ark finds and verifies an email for about 70% of exported contacts. The rest still arrive with name, title, LinkedIn URL and company data, at 0.5 credits and nothing for the missing email. That 70% is measured after verification, not before it. The fairest test is to export a sample of your own ICP, send it from the tool you use today with no verifier in between, and compare bounces at day seven.

How Clay does it

In Clay you assemble validation yourself. The work email waterfall charges only the provider that finds a match, and a validation provider is optional. When you add one, your strategy decides what passes: Conservative is the safest setting, Balanced explicitly includes catch-alls, and Aggressive accepts more risk. Select validators cost 0 Data Credits, though every record enriched counts as an Action.

Clay publishes no bounce rate or accuracy figure; its claims are about coverage, saying waterfalls routinely triple it. Its documentation also shows a found email is not automatically valid: Clay's default pattern guess returned a valid email roughly 31% of the time on one test dataset.

Reviews on G2 are mostly positive (4.6 out of 5 from 226 reviews, October 2026), with learning curve and cost the most cited downsides. An August 2026 reviewer said the data still needs checking, and a September 2026 reviewer said the AI had invented contacts.

The trade-off, stated fairly

Clay gives you control: you choose the providers, the order and the validation rules, and a well-built waterfall can reach contacts a single source misses. The cost of that control is that quality depends on how the table is built, and a wrong setting spends credits or lets risky addresses through. AI Ark makes one decision for you, that only verified addresses leave the database, and applies it to every export, through the web app, the API and inside Clay.

True cost: what a valid lead actually costs

List price tells you what a plan costs, not what a usable contact costs. So the comparison here is total annual spend divided by valid contacts delivered, at the cheapest plan that covers the volume. That matters more than usual with Clay, which charges on two separate meters.

AI Ark charges 0.5 credits per person profile, 0.5 per valid email (only when one is found), 5 per mobile number, 0.1 per company record and 4 per personality analysis. Clay charges 0.5 Data Credits per email found and 0.5 per LinkedIn profile enrichment, 0 for select validation providers, plus at least one Action for each enrichment step, with Data Credits starting at $0.05 each.

Worked scenario: what happens as volume grows

Assumptions: you need people with verified work emails, exported to CSV. AI Ark returns a verified email for 70% of contacts. For Clay we use the 90% success rate from Clay's own worked example and count every found email as valid, which is generous to Clay; that example also charges 0 Data Credits for finding the people. Each Clay row uses one Action for the email step and one for validation.

Launch, 1.2M Actions + 600K Data Credits/year, $26,088

$48.31

All figures are annual billing. On monthly billing the 10,000 case is $11.29 for AI Ark and $48.89 for Clay, and the 50,000 case is $6.26 and $53.67.

The structural point is in the second row. AI Ark's cost per valid contact falls as packs get bigger. Clay's rises, because both meters step up at once: 22,500 Data Credits a month passes the 240,000-a-year tier, and roughly 95,000 Actions a month needs the 1.2M tier. At 50,000 contacts a month AI Ark lands at $5.00 to $6.26 per 1,000 valid contacts and Clay at $48.31 to $53.67, a gap of roughly 9x, and Clay's figure also pays for unlimited seats, signals, sequencing and the AI agent, which AI Ark does not include. Topping up Data Credits at Clay's 30% premium instead of moving up to the 600,000 tier brings the 50,000 case to about $26 per 1,000, still more than five times AI Ark's $5.00.

The narrow case, 2,000 contacts a month, tests the small end. AI Ark fits the $470-a-year plan at $27.98 per 1,000 valid contacts ($35.00 monthly). Clay's Launch plan at $2,004 a year covers it at $92.78 ($102.78 monthly).

The counterpoint, stated honestly

Clay's price is not only for data. Every plan includes unlimited seats, and Launch adds signals and sending, so part of Clay's cost can replace a sequencer you would otherwise buy. With your own provider API keys, each run costs one Action and no Data Credits. Clay's Free plan covers up to 200 found emails a month, within a 200-row table limit.

At very small volume both free tiers do the job. The gap opens once you buy data through Clay at volume.

The line item most comparisons leave out is verification. With AI Ark it is already done: no verifier subscription, no re-upload, no waiting on a cleaning job. With Clay you maintain the validation step yourself, and every record it enriches counts as an Action. Put your own volume through the pricing page to see where you land.

Compliance and data sourcing

We aggregate business contact data from public sources, community contributions and partner networks, and clean it with validation algorithms. We process it on the basis of legitimate interests under GDPR Article 6(1)(f), for B2B purposes only, and follow CCPA. Our GDPR page has the detail.

Anyone can ask to be removed through our opt-out page. Our terms prohibit automated extraction and scraping, and data you upload for enrichment or exclusion lists stays in your workspace; we don't fold it back into the database.

Clay completed a SOC 2 Type 2 audit in September 2024 and offers a signed DPA on request. Its privacy policy cites legitimate interests, includes a CCPA notice and shows a last-updated date of 11 September 2020. Clay says it works only with GDPR-compliant providers.

Choose Clay if

  • You want one tool for the whole outbound workflow, from sourcing to sending, and someone to own the build.

  • You want to control provider order and validation rules column by column.

  • You need job-change, web intent and other buying signals today; AI Ark's intent data is in development.

  • You need CRM auto-sync or data warehouse sync on a schedule, which Clay includes from Growth.

  • You want a built-in sequencer, ad audiences and an AI agent that researches accounts, all inside the same tool.

  • You need unlimited seats for a large team on a single plan.

Choose AI Ark if you need a Clay alternative for list building

  • You want a verified list of people and companies today, from a search, without building a table first.

  • You want every email checked at export, catch-alls included, with a bounce rate under 1.5% expected and no separate verifier in the stack.

  • You want one credit balance that rolls over up to 2x, instead of two meters where Actions expire each cycle.

  • You want Company Lookalike, headcount growth, employees by department and HQ separate from person location built into the search.

  • You prospect at volume and care about cost per valid contact: $9.02 per 1,000 at 10,000 contacts a month on annual billing.

  • You already use Clay and want a verified email source inside it, through our Clay templates and Email Finder API.

AI Ark is built to turn an ICP into a clean, send-ready file, at a cost that falls as you scale. Start on the free tier and run your own ICP.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is AI Ark a good Clay alternative?

For list building and verified emails, yes. AI Ark is a database of 400M+ people and 70M+ companies that exports contacts with BounceBan-verified emails, at $9.02 per 1,000 valid contacts at 10,000 a month on annual billing. Clay is a workflow platform that buys data from other providers. If you mainly use Clay to find and verify contacts, AI Ark covers that job directly.

2. What is the difference between AI Ark and Clay?

AI Ark is a B2B database: you search, filter and export a verified file, with one credit balance. Clay is a workflow tool: you build tables that call third-party providers, AI models and other apps, paid with Actions and Data Credits. Clay gives you the tools to assemble the data yourself. AI Ark hands it to you ready to send.

3. How much does Clay cost compared with AI Ark?

Clay's Launch plan is $185 a month on monthly billing or $167 a month on annual, and Growth is $495 or $446, each the sum of an Actions tier and a Data Credits tier. AI Ark starts at $49 a month for 5,000 credits, or $470 a year for 60,000, with a free tier of 100 credits a month. At 10,000 contacts a month, AI Ark costs $9.02 per 1,000 valid contacts against $44.00 for Clay.

4. Can I use AI Ark inside Clay?

Yes. AI Ark publishes Clay templates that call the Email Finder API from a Clay table, one row at a time, using a LinkedIn URL or an AI Ark person ID; Clay lists its HTTP API integration on the Growth plan. Each successful lookup costs 1 AI Ark credit and returns a BounceBan-verified email with profile data, and nothing is charged when no valid email is found.

5. Does AI Ark verify catch-all emails?

Yes. In Clay, whether catch-alls pass depends on the validation provider and strategy you choose in the waterfall; the Balanced strategy explicitly includes them. AI Ark validates each catch-all address individually with BounceBan and delivers it only when it is confirmed, labeled "Catch-All Valid", and unknown and risky addresses are never exported.

6. Is Clay worth it?

With an operator to build and maintain tables, yes: Clay's waterfalls, signals and sequencer can run the whole outbound motion from one tool, and G2 reviewers rate it 4.6 out of 5, citing learning curve and cost as the main downsides. For teams that mainly need verified contacts, the price is hard to justify: at 10,000 contacts a month Clay works out at $44.00 per 1,000 valid contacts against $9.02 on AI Ark, with no table to build.

7. Do Clay credits roll over like AI Ark credits?

AI Ark credits roll over up to 2x your monthly plan, and that one balance covers search, profiles, emails and mobiles. Clay's Data Credits roll over up to 2x the monthly amount on Launch and Growth, and Enterprise customers can carry over up to 15% of the prior year's purchased credits if they renew at an equal or higher commitment. Clay's Actions reset each billing cycle and do not roll over.

8. Can I try both before deciding?

Yes. AI Ark's free tier gives you 100 credits a month with no card, enough to export a sample of your ICP with verified emails. Clay has a Free plan with 500 Actions and 100 Data Credits a month and a 14-day trial of paid plans. Run the same ICP in both, send to each list and compare bounces and replies; the AI Ark sample arrives verified, with no table to build first.
